Sen. Gounardes: Pied-à-Terre Tax Can Help Fund Services New Yorkers Need, Like Child Care, Health Care and Housing
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: APRIL 15, 2026
New York State Senator Andrew Gounardes issued the following statement in response to Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposal for a tax on second homes in New York City worth at least $5 million:
“This is about basic fairness: if you can afford multiple multimillion-dollar homes, you can afford to pay a bit more in taxes, so New York remains a bold and vibrant city where everyday New Yorkers can access basic needs like child care, health care and housing. Too many New York families are struggling to make ends meet, and our state budget should be putting their needs first. At a time when the Trump administration is slashing taxes for the wealthiest and services for the neediest, it’s on us to do the right thing and pass a budget that works for working New Yorkers.”
