Sen. Gounardes: New York Immigration Package is a Crucial Step. We Have More To Do.
New York State Senator Andrew Gounardes issued the following statement in response to the immigration legislative package approved by the New York State legislature:
“As the descendent of immigrants, I’m proud to vote for a package of bills to protect New Yorkers from ICE's tyrannical family-separation agenda. It's time to stop the madness. These bills ban formal collusion between ICE and local police, prohibit ICE from breaking into our schools and hospitals, and ban immigration agents from using masks to hide their identity. This is about real public safety for all of us.
“But our work is not done. Our laws don’t do enough to stop the informal collusion between ICE and local governments that let too many families fall through the cracks—including vulnerable people like Nurul Amin Shah Alam. My ‘New York For All’ Act is the best way to protect all New Yorkers. It applies to all the state and local agencies our communities rely on. That way, New Yorkers can attend parent-teacher conferences, report labor violations, and go about their lives without fearing they’ll be ripped apart from their families for doing so.
“All New Yorkers deserve safety and opportunity, whether their families arrived here 100 years ago or just yesterday. I’ll keep fighting until we make that dream a reality.”
