Sen. Gounardes: Trump’s Federal Budget is a Disaster for Brooklyn

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 7, 2025

New York State Senator Andrew Gounardes issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump signing the Republican tax and spending bill:

“Trump’s bogus budget is an unmitigated disaster that will take food out of Brooklynites’ mouths, steal their health care, and make them poorer, all so billionaires get an extra tax break.

“In Rep. Nicole Malliotakis’ district alone—which includes Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst, along with Staten Island—over 222,000 people rely on Medicaid and Child Health Plus. Over 120,000 people—including children, seniors, and veterans—rely on SNAP, which faces billions in cuts. The budget leaves tens of thousands of those families without health insurance, guts funding for their hospitals, steals the money they use to pay for groceries, slashes billions in funds for their affordable housing, and eliminates hundreds of thousands of their jobs.

“Trump’s budget makes Brooklyn poorer, sicker and hungrier, but Rep. Malliotakis and New York’s other Republican representatives voted for it anyway. It’s a cruel, shameful attack on working families that makes life more expensive and puts our future at risk. It represents a deep betrayal of American values, and to sign it into law on July 4th only adds insult to injury.

“Trump and his Republican allies have made their vision for this country clear: they want an oligarchy where the wealthy rule over the rest of us. That’s a vision Brooklyn simply cannot accept, and we must continue to fight it every way we can."
