Sen. Gounardes: New York’s New Laws Protect Kids from Big Tech’s Safety Risks
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 28, 2026
New York State Senator Andrew Gounardes issues the following statement in response to Governor Kathy Hochul signing two bills today: one that bans unsafe AI chatbot features for minors, and another by Sen. Gounardes that mandates safety features for internet-connected baby monitors:
“We’ve seen it time and again: left unchecked, Big Tech is willing to put children’s safety at risk in the name of profit. These new technologies can be helpful, but they pose real risks to our kids’ privacy and well-being. Whether it’s an AI chatbot or a camera aimed at a crib, smart, thoughtful guardrails like these can protect New Yorkers from harm while allowing them to access tech’s benefits. That way, parents can sleep soundly knowing they and their kids are safe. Thanks to Governor Hochul and my legislative colleagues for their partnership on this work."
Background:
In recent years, Senator Gounardes has passed several pieces of legislation designed to hold tech corporations accountable and ensure digital safety, including the SAFE For Kids Act, the New York Child Data Protection Act, social media warning labels, the Stop Online Predators Act/Safe By Design Act, and the RAISE Act.
